Chili Con Queso Cerveza Crostini + Huge Cookbook Giveaway
On a tall shelf in my kitchen sits my grandmothers copy of The Joy of Cooking. A thick, vintage, hard backed book with a faded red ribbon that marks the Candied Sweet Potatoes recipe on page 325 that she made every Thanksgiving. Flipping through the yellowed pages, reading her notes scrawled in the margin, I get to connect with her years after she’s left us. I get to cook with her in a way I never did when she was alive. Her note about adding sage to the stuffing, or freezing her pie crust for ten minutes before baking it, are conversations we were never able to have. If there is one type of book that I will always want in the print version, it’s a cookbook. I want to feel the pages, make my own notes, and someday pass it down to my future grandchildren. It becomes a conversation between decades, an engagement among generations, that connects people in a way that nothing other than food has the ability to do.
I’ve joined a group of fantastic bloggers to giveaway a dozen beautiful cookbooks. I own about half of these, some of my favorite cookbooks ever written. Chili Con Queso Cerveza Crostini
Ingredients
- 1 tbs butter
- 1 jalapeno stemmed seeded and chopped
- 1 poblano stemmed seeded and chopped
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar
- 1 cup shredded jack cheese
- 2/3 cup IPA
- 8 ounces cream cheese
- 3 tbs corn starch
- 2 french baugettes sliced into ½ inch slices
- 1/3 cup cilantro minced
- 2 large avocados sliced
- 1 large tomato diced
Instructions
- Preheat broiler.
- In a pan over medium high heat, melt the butter. Add both types of chopped
- peppers cook until softened, stirring occasionally.
- In a food processor add the cheddar, jack cheese, beer, cream cheese and
- cornstarch. Puree until smooth, about 5 minutes. Add to the pot with the peppers,
- stirring constantly until thickened, about 6 to 8 minutes.
- Arrange baguette slices on a baking sheet. Place under broiler until lightly
- browned, about 1 to 2 minutes. Flip each slice and brown on the opposite side under
- broiler, about an additional 1 to 2 minutes.
- Spread each toasted baguette slice with a generous amount of chili queso dip.
- Sprinkle with cilantro, top with tomato and avocado, Serve immediately.

i have an unhealthy obsession with cookbooks. i have "way too many" (according to my crazy fiance). as far as i’m concerned, you can never have too many. i read them like novels! at the moment, my favorite is "what katie ate" by katie quinn davies.

favorite one right noe is BAKEWISE by Shirley Corriher. My daughter is a pastry chef so I’m getting back into baking and this is a great book for understanding the chemistry behind baking

My mother kept a book of recipes she 'inherited' from my grandmother. That is the first cookbook I ever used when first started cooking at the age of 9. My mother had broken her ankle so she couldn’t do much in the kitchen. She handed me that book and sat at the table to walk me through everything. Some of the recipes are unique to my family and some cover all the classic techniques and Western recipes my grandmother was to get her hands on back in Pakistan. I started my own cookbook years ago and recently borrowed the one that started it all so I can repair it.

With warmer weather finally starting to come, my favourite cookbook currently is Fresh Food Superfast. I love that it’s full of lighter recipes. It’s definitely my favourite spring/summer cookbook.

The first book that came to mind was Timing is Everything. I’ve always kept it closest on hand for reference. Obviously I’ve had it since before I could just google how long to cook a particular cut of meat/veggie with my phone.

Unfortunately, neither my mom nor my grandmother ever wrote anything down. That set me on the road to cookbook collecting. I started decades ago with Betty Crocker and picked up volumes at estate/garage sales, auctions, used book stores. Friends blessed me with new/used books for every occasion imaginable. At last count….5,000 +/- and that doesn’t include cooking magazines, booklets, and pamphlets all dating from 1920s to 2014! No duplicates and I love each and every one!

My wonderful Grandma made a cookbook with all the family recipes, it’s by far my favorite book of all time! I also find a lot of use from the Dorie Greenspan’s book, Baking.

I think my favorite cookbook is a cookbook my Aunt Gail published, Cart Before The Horse. It was filled with awesome swedish recipes and tips for barn life. 🙂
Also, your cookbook probably has been used the most frequently.. 🙂

It has been a long standing tradition in our family to gift cookbooks for major life events. When I got married, my aunt gave me How to Cook Everything. It’s a toss up between that and the BH&G cookbook that gets the most use out of the published books, however, my ultimate favorite "cookbook" are the stacks of handwritten spiral bound notebooks and 3 ring binders that my grandmother assembled.

Oh I love all cookbooks. However, my current favorite is "Serve Yourself: Nightly Adventures in Cooking for One" by Joe Yonan. It is by far the best "cooking for one" cookbook out there. It is rich, flavorful recipes that are easy to follow and execute. His photography is also beautiful!

The cookbook I use the most is definitely the America’s Test Kitchen Complete TV Show Cookbook. Tons of good stuff in there… I recently got a Thermapen and now I am working my way through the chapter on pork chops 🙂

My favorite cookbook is the Food Porn Daily cookbook. The recipes are beautiful and everything I’ve made has been delicious. A salmon recipe from that book even became my boyfriend’s birthday dinner request, which was shocking!
